Growing up on Kadena Air Base in Okinawa shaped much more than my childhood environment. It sparked a deep and lasting passion for Japanese culture that continues to guide my interests and studies today. Living in Okinawa gave me a unique window into East Asian traditions, history, and daily life.
This blog is my way of sharing that journey and offering an educational space to dive deeper into Japanese culture.

Early Exposure to Okinawan Culture
My earliest memories are filled with the sights and sounds of Okinawa. The island’s distinct culture stands apart from mainland Japan, with its own language dialects, music, and crafts. Living on Kadena Air Base meant I was surrounded by a mix of American and Okinawan influences. The mornings began with reviele and the afternoons ended with taps. Living on base is a cherished memory of mine where base was one giant neighborhood. Beyond the gate, Japan unfolded in brilliant colors, sounds of sanshin, and smells of fresh fish and salty ramen! This environment sparked my curiosity. I went to Montessori school off base at East West Montessori and my early upbringings were surrounded by Japanese culture and traditions.
Developing a Deeper Interest in Japanese Culture
As I now enter high school, my interest expanded beyond Okinawa to include broader Japanese culture. I am going to take Japanese language classes from Oregon State University. I plan to create an Asian culture club where we explore East Asian history, culture, and food. I am co-founder of Southern Oregon East Asian Awareness which is a non-profit with aim to help bring more Asian cultural awareness and curiosity to southern Oregon.
The Role of Education in Shaping My Passion
Education played a key role in nurturing my passion. I sought out resources beyond the classroom, such as visiting Okinawan museums and historical sites. For example, the Okinawa Prefectural Museum offered insights into the island’s unique flora, fauna, and cultural artifacts. Learning about the hardships and resilience of Okinawan people gave me a new perspective on cultural preservation.
I also connected with Japanese students and local Okinawan youth through Okinawa Diplomats soccer club. These friendships allowed me to practice language and cultural skills and gain firsthand insights into contemporary Japanese life. Through conversations and shared experiences, I realized how culture is both rooted in tradition and constantly evolving.
Why Sharing This Journey Matters
This blog is more than a personal story. It’s an educational platform where I can share what I’ve learned and continue exploring East Asian cultures, especially Japanese culture. I want to provide readers with practical knowledge, cultural context, and personal reflections that make these traditions accessible and meaningful.
My journey shows how cultural curiosity can lead to academic growth and global awareness. It highlights my commitment to learning beyond textbooks and engaging with communities. These experiences have shaped my worldview and motivated me to pursue further studies in East Asian culture and history.
Practical Tips for Exploring Japanese Culture
